Choose For The Traffic, Not Just The Speed

A high-speed door is designed for openings used frequently during the working day. Faster travel can help limit the time a route stays open, but the full cycle depends on detection, controls and how vehicles approach. Headline opening speed alone does not establish whether a door suits your site.

We help commercial buyers assess high-speed door installation, operating faults and maintenance requirements. Typical enquiries involve distribution routes, production areas and separation between working environments. Tell us what moves through the opening and what problem you are trying to solve.

An internal flexible door and an external rigid door can have quite different roles. External openings need attention to weather exposure and the security arrangement when the site closes. Do not assume a lightweight fast-action curtain replaces the function of a security shutter.

Controls And Protection Around The Opening

Activation may use sensors, pull controls or an interface with a wider site system. The arrangement should reflect approach routes, vehicle movement and the presence of pedestrians. A detector that opens for passing traffic can undermine the separation that the door was intended to provide.

Safety equipment must be specified for the complete application. Manufacturers may use light grilles, safety edges and other protective arrangements depending on the design. A vision panel helps people see through a curtain, but it is not a substitute for the protective functions selected for the installation.

Where vehicles and pedestrians share an area, consider the wider traffic layout. Separate routes and clear procedures may be needed alongside the door controls. Changing the closing delay or sensor settings should be assessed rather than treated as a convenient way to make the door cycle faster.

From Site Assessment To Handover

Begin by describing the route, door dimensions and operating conditions. Include any temperature difference, dust, cleaning regime or exposure to draughts. Cold rooms, food handling and controlled environments can have additional requirements which need a product-specific assessment.

The survey reviews the opening, fixing surfaces, services and the proposed detection zone. A specification should identify the door type, curtain or panel material, activation method and safety arrangements. It should also explain any coordination required with another door or process.

Once installed, the system needs commissioning in the conditions in which it will actually operate. Check the relationship between controls, protection and nearby traffic. Handover should cover normal operation, fault reporting, safe isolation and the agreed maintenance approach.

Applicable Safety Requirements

BS EN 12453:2017+A1:2021 sets out requirements and test methods for safety in use of power operated doors within its scope. A fast cycle does not reduce the need to assess trapping and impact hazards. The risk assessment needs to consider foreseeable use around the entire opening.

The Workplace Regulations and, where applicable, PUWER 1998 remain relevant to operation and maintenance. A product name or automatic reopening feature does not remove the premises dutyholder responsibilities. Keep instructions and service records available to the people managing the route.

Faults, Maintenance And Quotation Factors

A fast-action door that repeatedly reverses can have a detection, alignment or operating problem. Damaged curtains, worn guides and contamination can also affect behaviour. Do not tape over sensors or bypass a safety circuit to keep a production route moving.

Maintenance should follow the selected system instructions and reflect usage and conditions. Record impact events and recurring faults, even when the door appears to reset afterwards. Those details help the specialist distinguish an isolated event from a problem with traffic layout or equipment selection.

Quotation factors include opening size, door construction, activation and protection equipment, electrical supply and installation access. Specialist environmental requirements can change the specification. Ask whether commissioning, user instruction, removal of existing equipment and future maintenance are included in the proposal.

When enquiring about an existing door, include the manufacturer, model and any fault display wording if safely visible. Explain whether it is stuck open, closed or operating intermittently. Attendance and repair options depend on the particular system, diagnosis and availability of compatible components.

High-Speed Doors FAQs

Will A High-Speed Door Reduce Heat Loss?

A high-speed door can reduce the time an opening remains exposed compared with a slower door used in the same way. The actual effect depends on traffic, opening size, controls and the temperature difference. Assess the whole route and proposed product rather than relying on an unsupported energy-saving figure or opening speed alone.

Can A High-Speed Door Replace A Security Shutter?

A high-speed door does not automatically provide the same security function as a commercial shutter. Flexible internal doors are often selected for traffic and environmental separation. External security depends on the specific product and closing arrangements. A survey should establish whether another secure door is needed when the building is unoccupied.
